On The Impact of the Locality on Short-Circuit Characteristics: Experimental Analysis and Multiphysics Simulation of External and Local Short-Circuits Applied to Lithium-Ion Batteries / J. Sturm, A. Rheinfeld, D. Buzon and A. Jossen / Journal of The Electrochemical Society, Vol. 167, Number 9 (2020) - DOI

Short circuits in lithium-ion batteries are sometimes the most safety-critical scenarios that can occur when used in stationary or mobile energy storage systems. For a better understanding of the electrical, thermal and electrochemical processes occurring during a short circuit, local and external short circuits on small (< 60 mAh) lithium-ion pouch cells are initiated in this work by needle penetration and external resistance and investigated with a quasi-isothermal test bench setup. The comprehensive series of experiments compares not only the magnitudes of current and voltage, but also heat generation and the voltage signal at the needle for both single-layer and double-layer electrode stack geometries. With the help of a multidimensional multiphysical simulation model, the local and external short circuit can be related to each other and thus the hardness of a local/internal short circuit can be determined.
