At LES, the supply of carbon-containing synthesis gases for the production of synthetic fuels is investigated simulatively and experimentally within the framework of research projects. For this purpose, a number of test facilities for the gasification of waste and biogenic solid fuels are available. The entire spectrum from gasification kinetics to the demonstration of the entire process chain: biomass -> synthesis gas -> conversion is covered. In addition, high-temperature solid oxide electrolysis cells and the synthesis of methane from biogenic gases are being researched.
In addition, LES uses energy system modeling to assess the need for power-to-X in the European context in an integrated energy system. This energy system modeling and operational planning of different types of power plants helps to define techno-economic frameworks and to identify the potential of technologies in the energy supply.
