The course content includes advanced exploration methods such as seismic interpretation, tectonics, reservoir geology, and modeling. In addition, students are taught in the following areas: geomechanics, rock physics, hydrochemistry, flow and heat transport modeling, conveying and energy technology. Additional courses on the energy industry, business administration in the context of mining, environmental, licensing and public procurement law as well as public participation complete the concept.

Detailed information about the masters program as well as application and admission material:

At the FAU, the GeoZentrum Nordbayern organizes the courses to which the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität contributes its expertise in the field of applied geophysics. At the TUM, the Department of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering supervises the new study program. External lecturers from the industry ensure a strong practical relevance. During the semester, most lectures are held in Erlangen, in Munich mostly block courses take place.

In order to achieve the goals of the energy transition, the share of renewable energies must be greatly expanded. Geothermal energy as a base loadable, long-term available domestic energy resource plays an important role in the energy mix of the future. Bavaria is the leading area in Germany in producing geothermal energy; Here are the conditions for the use of this technology of the future due to extensive existing hot deep waters particularly favorable. The training of geothermal experts at Bavarian universities in the immediate vicinity of the existing facilities offers students a very good practical relevance. However, the field of activity of the graduates is not just the geothermal industry. The mediated methods are rather transferable to many other areas that require an understanding of the geological underground.

The Bayerische Staatsministerium für Bildung und Kultus, Wissenschaft und Kunst is funding the master program "GeoThermie/GeoEnergie" as part of the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria.
